So, what is the appeal of game shows on television? I happened to watch the celebration of NBC's 90th anniversary last night, which included looks at different categories of shows throughout the evening, including game shows like Twenty-One and Truth or Consequences. My oldest son went through a period when he was fascinated by The Price Is Right.
Why? What is the appeal of watching people you don't know trying to win money? You have nothing invested in it. The host tries to help you connect with the contestant, by asking the questions trying to pull out interesting information that helps the audience make that connection. The new show The Wall admits this upfront, picking contestants with tangible reasons to root for them - the one I saw had a 'teacher of the year' and her husband, desperate for a down payment for a house.
We watch game shows because we like the idea of ordinary people who are deserving winning something of value.
So, I have a great idea for a new game show. It's called Salvation.
Here's the idea - we get people who are looking for answers, and guide them to accepting Jesus Christ as their Savior. As a parting gift, each winning contestant gets to take home the Holy Spirit indwelling within them.
Sounds boring? It wouldn't be for the winners. And it's the most valuable thing you could possibly win!
And you can all join in and play the home game right now! Here's how you play - confess to the Lord Jesus Christ that you are a sinner, as we all are, and that you need His help, as we all do, and that you vow to follow His teachings, as we all should, and let Him come into your life, as we all want deep down, and change our eternal destination and our temporal life.
"Confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, (and) you will be saved." - Romans 10:9
