The Bible joke was so funny, the cake was in tiers...

A woman walked into a bakery and said to the young man at the register, “I’m getting married next week. Would you make me a cake for the wedding? Not the traditional tower upon tower thing, but a regular, full sized sheet cake.

The young man looks at her and says, “No problem, ma’am! We can do that for you, sure! Did you want something written on the cake?”

The bride-to-be smiled and said, “Yes. That’s why I want that kind of cake. My fiancé and I are both devout Christians, and we want you to put First John 4:18 on our wedding cake.”

The baker’s assistant looked confused. He said, “I’m sorry – what do you want on the cake?”

“First John 4:18. You know, “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.”

                Still confused.

“You’re not a Bible reader, are you?”

He scratched his head. “No, ma’am, I’m not. But my boss is, and he’ll be the one writing on the cake.”

That relieved the bride: “That will be fine, then. Just write down on the form thing there that we want him to write out the words to First John 4:18 on the cake. Got it?”

He was writing as she talked. “…four-eighteen. OK, I’ve got it. We’ll have that ready for you on Friday, then.”

She smiled and said, “Wonderful! We’ll get someone here to pick it up! Thanks!”

So the wedding comes around, and of course in the hustle and bustle leading up to the big day, the bride never gets to see the actual cake in advance of the reception. So imagine her surprise when she and her new husband reach the cake, only to discover that the kid at the bakery didn’t understand the difference between “John” and “First John”, so the baker wrote something completely different on the cake.

“I thought it was odd,” he would later say, “but the customer is always right!”

The bride, needless to say, was mortified to read that her wedding cake showed John 4:18, which said,

“For you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband.”
